Vet varsity trains farmers in livestock products

Ludhiana, September 11The department of livestock products technology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) organised a five-day training programme on “hHygienic pork production and value addition for entrepreneurship development” for the pig farmers and budding entrepreneurs. As many as 36 pig farmers participated in this training programme. Manish Kumar Chatili, head of Department of Livestock Products Technology, informed trainees that at present, the pig population in Punjab is estimated at 0.50 lakh only and around 1,000 farmers in the state were running these pig farms. He aslo said majority of farmers were selling their produce as live animals to contractors, to be sold in north-eastern states of the country. Harish Verma, director, extension education, released a compendium developed by the department faculty for this training programme and distributed certificates to the participants on successful completion of the training.
