Amritsar ward off stiff challenge, lift trophy

Sports CorrespondentLudhiana, September 16Amritsar warded off a stiff challenge from Sangrur before romping home victorious to lift the title in the men’s section in the 27th Senior Punjab State Softball Championship held in Ludhiana. Amritsar outplayed Jalandhar (5-0), while Sangrur defeated Ferozepur (6-0) to storm their way into the title clash. Jalandhar secured the third position as in the hard-line cup match they got the better of Ferozepur (4-1). In the women’s section, Ludhiana emerged winners, while Amritsar and Gurdaspur finished as the first and second runners-up, respectively, whereas Moga secured the fourth position. Pran Nath Passi, honorary secretary, Punjab Softball Association, distributed the prizes to the position holders.

Sports Correspondent Ludhiana, September 16 Amritsar warded off a stiff challenge from Sangrur before romping home victorious to lift the title in the men’s section in the 27th Senior Punjab State Softball Championship held in Ludhiana. The final turned out to be a well-contested affair with players from Amritsar and Sangrur waging a spirited battle, in which the former came out triumphant with a narrow margin (1-0) to lay their hands on the winners’ trophy. In the semi-finals, both Amritsar and Sangrur faced a little resistance from their respective opponents — Jalandhar and Ferozepur, whom they edged out easily to secure berths in the finals. Amritsar outplayed Jalandhar (5-0), while Sangrur defeated Ferozepur (6-0) to storm their way into the title clash. Jalandhar secured the third position as in the hard-line cup match they got the better of Ferozepur (4-1). Earlier, in the league matches, Ferozepur blanked Fazilka (9-0); Mohali beat Mansa (5-0); Patiala routed Pathankot (10-0); Gurdaspur overpowered Moga (5-2); Ferozepur prevailed over Ludhiana (1-0); Sangrur thrashed Mohali (9-1); Amritsar overwhelmed Patiala (11-0) and Jalandhar scrambled past Moga (1-0). In the women’s section, Ludhiana emerged winners, while Amritsar and Gurdaspur finished as the first and second runners-up, respectively, whereas Moga secured the fourth position. Pran Nath Passi, honorary secretary, Punjab Softball Association, distributed the prizes to the position holders. He congratulated the winners and thanked the coaches and players for organising the meet successfully.
