100 more vending zones identified

Besides, 16 restricted vending zones and 46 non-vending zones have been identified. Street vendors of the city have been demanding implementation of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2014 for a long time. In restricted vending zones, vendors will be allowed to run business in a time-bound manner, as per information. An official of the Tehbazari wing said 44 vending zones were notified last year.

Ludhiana, September 19 The Municipal Corporation has identified sites for 100 vending zones for streets vendors in the four zones of the civic body. Besides, 16 restricted vending zones and 46 non-vending zones have been identified. Now, two resolutions in this regard would be presented to get approval in the MC House meeting on September 23. After getting approval in the meeting, the MC will have to send resolutions to government to get the zone-wise street vending plan notified. Street vendors of the city have been demanding implementation of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2014 for a long time. Once the vending zones are set up, vendors would be able to sell their goods legally at designated sites. Currently, many street vendors are forced to make encroachments on roads to station their carts. A total of 21,725 street vendors have been identified by a private company. Of them, there 5,924 vendors in Zone A, 5,377 in Zone B, 3,655 in Zone C and 6,769 vendors in Zone D. According to information, the identified vendors will be allowed to run their businesses at vending zones. No vendor will be allowed to carry out vending activities in no-vending zones. In restricted vending zones, vendors will be allowed to run business in a time-bound manner, as per information. A member of the town vending committee and president of the Ludhiana Rehri Phari Federation, Tiger Singh, said the vendors would not be forced to raise any encroachment once the vending zones are set up. “We have been demanding from the civic body to set up vending zones for the past five years, but the project has been delayed. We want that the vending zones should be set up at the earliest,” he added. An official of the Tehbazari wing said 44 vending zones were notified last year.
