Panchayats oppose treatment plant near residential areas

The members of the panchayats of Hazuri Bagh, Chitti Colony, Gagandeep Colony, Bhattian Bet, Kadian and others have raised their voice against the treatment plant being setup near residential areas. They claimed that a large number of people of nearby areas will suffer if the treatment plant is set up there. People have been living there for many years and thus, will strongly oppose if construction of the treatment plant is started there. The panchayat members demanded that the connection of the treatment plant should not be connected the MC’s sewerage treatment plant. “The Punjab Pollution Control Board is the concerned authority for the project of effluent treatment plant for the dyeing units.

Harshraj Singh Ludhiana, November 18 Sarpanches of various panchayats have written a complaint to the Deputy Commissioner against the set up of an effluent treatment plant for the dyeing units at Bahadurke Road. The members of the panchayats of Hazuri Bagh, Chitti Colony, Gagandeep Colony, Bhattian Bet, Kadian and others have raised their voice against the treatment plant being setup near residential areas. They have demanded from the district administration to stop the construction of the plant, or else they would be forced to start an agitation. They claimed that a large number of people of nearby areas will suffer if the treatment plant is set up there. Sarpanch Vijay Kumar Singh of Hazuri Bagh Panchayat, Bahdaurke Road, said: “Residents of various areas because of the setting up of the treatment plant. They feel that no treatment plant should be setup near any residential area. People have been living there for many years and thus, will strongly oppose if construction of the treatment plant is started there. We want from the administration to get the work stopped as there are chances that the residents living near the plant would suffer many health problems.” Sarpanch of Gagandeep Colony, Geeta Devi said we appealed to the administration to pay attention towards our concern. The panchayat members demanded that the connection of the treatment plant should not be connected the MC’s sewerage treatment plant. “We want a legal action to be taken to stop the work for the treatment plant for dyeing units. If no action is taken in this regard, we will intensify our struggle and the district administration will be held responsible for the same,” said the sarpanches. “The Punjab Pollution Control Board is the concerned authority for the project of effluent treatment plant for the dyeing units. If the panchayats have raised objections about the project, we will look into the matter,” said Deputy Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Agrawal.
