Farmers protest delay in crop loans by bank officials

Tribune News ServiceMachhiwara, November 18Farmers of the Machhiwara area sat on a dharna and blocked the traffic on the Machhiwara-Samrala road for an hour demanding crop loans from Cooperative Bank of Machhiwara without any delay, today. Farmers raised slogans against bank officials for failing to give them seasoned crop loans. They stated that about 6,000 farmers of about 70 villages belonging to 13 cooperative societies of Machhiwara area were attached with that branch of the Ludhiana Cooperative Bank but were unable to get loans owing to alleged shortage of bank staff and non-working of branch computers. Farmers said they had remitted their dues along with interest but the bank officials were dilly-dallying their crop loans and were facing hardships to sow their crops. The protest was called off after consultating with bank officials.

Naib Tehsildar and SHO, Machiwara, reached on the site and persuaded them to end the blockade. The protest was called off after consultating with bank officials.
