Our Correspondent Doraha, June 27 ‘The Flooded Desert’, a debut novel by Associate Prof NK Neb, set against the trouble-torn days in Punjab during 1980s, explores the cultural history of contemporary India and Punjab. Talking about ‘The Flooded Desert’, Neb said, “It is a story of a middleclass village girl Devika. The novel is written in a simple style and provides evocative details along with the presentation of certain social issues from new perspectives. It brings out the cultural history of contemporary social reality of India and Punjab. Dr Ashu Toor Gill, who has written a review of the book, said, “The gripping story and the way it gets unfolded makes it an immensely interesting novel. It offers a view of numerous aspects of contemporary life from the oppression that women experience in traditional Indian society, the way new developments have brought a change in their way of thinking, the helplessness of elderly people as they face destabilisation of their authority in family and society, the way life abroad tempts and attracts people and inhuman and unethical ways they adopt and settle abroad. All this has been depicted with pointed references to the trouble-torn times in Punjab,” shared Toor. Principal, DAV College, Jalandhar, SK Arora said, “NK Neb, before writing this novel, has been engaged in critical writings. He had single-handedly brought out 32 issues of Pragati’s English journal, a biannual literary journal, and organised a number of national seminars. His journal has been approved by the UGC in its list of journals. He has also written full length books on English poetry, fiction and literary criticism.”
