City lensmen share stories behind their perfect clicks

Ramesh Verma’s picture of a slum-dweller trying to pick through the remains after fire completely razed around 100 slum-dwellings in Haibowal area did not need words to depict the plight of slum-dwellers. The photographs showcased skill of photojournalists getting there and clicking the perfect photographs telling the whole story in the nick of time. “We don’t get another chance to click photographs as that fleeting newsworthy moment is gone forever. This sense the timing is partly god-gifted and the rest comes from learning and experience,” says Mahajan. To uncover truth journalists often have to put their lives at risk and photojournalists often have to be in the middle of the action. Recalling an incident, Sourav Arora, another photojournalist, said once he was clicking the pictures when owners of a factor in Giaspura area shot dead a protestor, who were protesting against factory-owners in case of crushing of a person under a vehicle. “I kept standing there and was clicking pictures at the spot, when the person placed pistol on my temple. I had no choice but to push him as I escaped. Had he pushed the trigger, I would not have been standing here,” he said. In fact, celebrated photo journalist from the city Ravi Kanojia, had even lost his life last year as he was electrocuted as he climbed near top of the train in Jhansi to click the perfect photograph of water-train parked in the railway yard there. The exhibition was in fact dedicated to him and promising photo journalist Aditya Jaitley who had passed away in road accident in 2011.MP Ravneet Singh Bittu visited the exhibition on its second and concluding day. He welcomed the clean chit given to Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh in the 'City Centre Scam' and alleged that the previous SAD-BJP government had gotten the name of Capt embroiled in this matter. He said that it was unfortunate for the city that such an important project got derailed due to the SAD-BJP regime. He also assured a grant of Rs 5 lakh for Ludhiana Photo Journalists' Association.
