Our Correspondent Jagraon, November 19 It is not going to be a walk in a park for Charanjit Kaur Kalyan, the new president of the Municipal Council (MC), Jagraon. There are several challenges ahead for her. After assuming the charge of the MC president, Charanjit Kaur Kalyan, assured overall development of the town. Roads are in poor condition, cleanliness is another major issue, but the most daunting task for Kalyan will be controlling corruption in the civic body. Another task for her will be to improve the condition of Old Grain Market and drainage of rainwater from the town. Besides, illegal encroachments on roadsides are yet to be removed. Many shopkeepers have encroached land in front of their shops as they enjoy support of some local politicians. In such a situation, it does not seem likely that the new MC chief will succeed in removing these encroachments. The strong nexus between contractors and municipal councillors is the root of corruption. It will be difficult for the Kalyan to break this nexus. It remains to be seen how the new MC chief brings funds from the state government for development works. Kalyan said though she was new in the office, she was well aware of problems faced by the people. “My focus will be on overall development of the city and there will be no compromise on this front,” she added. Kalyan said corruption would not be tolerated at any cost during her tenure.
