more-in Members of Students Federation of India and Democratic Youth Federation of India along with students of Devanga Arts College staged a protest in front of the college in Aruppukottai demanding arrest of its Assistant Professor, Nirmala Devi, accused of “luring” girl students into doing some ‘undisclosed’ favours for officials of Madurai KamarajUniversity, on Monday. The protest was led by SFI Virudhunagar district secretary, P. Prasanth. Over 60 students and youths squatted in front of the college gate and staged the protest raising slogans condemning the woman faculty. The agitators also sought the arrest of MKU officials who are mentioned in the telephonic conversation between Ms. Devi and four unidentified final year girl students. “We condemn the conduct of the woman teaching staff who promises to award higher marks and also deposit money into the accounts of the girl students if they fulfilled their “urgent needs”. This is highly unacceptable,” he said. 'Thorough probe needed' Raising the doubts that the present case could not be an isolated incident going by the content of the conversation, Mr. Prasanth said that only a thorough probe by the police could reveal any such ugly transactions that could have taken place in the past. The agitators also sought termination of services and arrest of “higher officials in MKU” who were be behind a larger “scheme” that seemed to be going on in an organised manner as per the conversation. An audio clip of the Assistant Professor trying to persuade the unwilling students into the “scheme” on the promise of academic progress and money went viral on social media. The college has clarified that it had immediately placed Ms. Devi under suspension on getting the complaint.
