A total of 15 students who took part in a 15-day film making workshop exhibited their work highlighting the theme ‘Safe space for all.’ Beulah Rajkumar, Advisor, Centre for Women’s Studies, stressed the need for expressive mediums to show issues such as harassment and sexual abuse. “As part of their course, students attended art and dance workshops to express their emotions. They were taught to use social media tools like blogging and hash tagging to make their point clear. Some were given self-defence training. A writing workshop will follow the creative writing workshop,” she said. Over 300 students viewed the four short films and discussed merits and demerits among themselves. Christianna Singh, Principal, stressed the need to have an open mind and effectively communicate thoughts against ills of the society. She urged students to make changes and told them to use their voice to ‘stop accepting conditioning.’ Peter Christopher, film maker and founder of Revelation Bay Productions, who trained the students in the workshop, said he was keen on ensuring equality for women in all spheres. “I have travelled to remote areas for shooting. In those places, I have observed that women shoulder the responsibility of being the breadwinners while men play cards and while away time. Women are inspiring and it is necessary to bring out these stories in the mainstream,” he said. He commended the efforts taken by the students.
