Cargo traffic hit as truckers begin strike

In neighbouring Thoothukudi, over 4,500 lorries participated in the strike while over 1,300 lorries were off the road in Kanniyakumari district due to the strike. Consequently, over 5,200 lorries participated in the strike in Tirunelveli district, the striking truckers said. The truckers had called for indefinite strike from Friday against the hike in third party insurance premium, collection of excess toll along all highways and sky-rocketing fuel price. However, milk, gas, fuel and water tankers were operated as usual as they did not participate in the strike. Transport of cement from a unit at Thaazhaiyooththu on Tirunelveli outskirts was also badly hit.
