Special child tortured: warden of home held

After investigation by Child Welfare Department officials, Colachel all-women police registered cases against the home in-charge Rajesh Sathya (43), Jebapriya (45) and Saroja (50). The girl was rescued by a team of District Child Protection Unit personnel on a tip-off on Saturday. NAGERCOILJebapriya (45), warden of the home for special children run by CSI church at Alangodu in Kanniyakumari district, was arrested on Sunday in connection with the harassment of a 17-year-old mentally-challenged girl inmate. When authorities visited the home, the child is said to have communicated the torture she suffered through gestures. Twenty-seven people, who staged the demonstration and blocked the road, were also arrested by the police.

Saroja (50), cook in the home, which is aided by the Department of Welfare of Differently Abled, had already been arrested by Colachel all-women police. The child was found to have suffered burns on her back, legs, arms and abdomen. When authorities visited the home, the child is said to have communicated the torture she suffered through gestures. She was then taken to Asaripallam Government Hospital on Saturday night. Following the incident, people, including the relatives of the girl and members of civil society organisations, staged a demonstration in front of the Collector’s residence here.
