MADURAISave Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) Coalition has demanded the constitution of a Commission of Inquiry to probe into alleged irregularities happened at MKU during the tenure of P.P. Chellathurai, whose appointment as the Vice-Chancellor of MKU, was set aside in June. The coalition also appealed to the Search Committee to recommend names of those who are well-versed in Tamil to ensure easy communication with stakeholders, which is essential for administering the university efficiently. While Mr. Chellathurai's appointment was set aside by Madras High Court, he appealed against the judgement at the Supreme Court, which dismissed his appeal petition on Monday. Arguing that MKU faced a lot of controversies and achieved little on the academic front during the tenure of the past three VCs, the coalition appealed to the Search Committee formed by the government to recommend names of honest persons, who are academically strong, for the appointment of new VC.

more-in MADURAI Save Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) Coalition has demanded the constitution of a Commission of Inquiry to probe into alleged irregularities happened at MKU during the tenure of P.P. Chellathurai, whose appointment as the Vice-Chancellor of MKU, was set aside in June. Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, the coalition thanked all the academicians, organisations and people from different walks of life for supporting the legal battle to cancel the appointment of Mr. Chellathurai, which, it said, was done in violation of moral and legal principles. While Mr. Chellathurai's appointment was set aside by Madras High Court, he appealed against the judgement at the Supreme Court, which dismissed his appeal petition on Monday. Alleging that a number of irregularities in the appointment of senior officials, temporary staff and launching of new schemes, R. Murali, secretary of the coalition, demanded the government to appoint a committee to probe into these allegations of corruption and other irregularities. Arguing that MKU faced a lot of controversies and achieved little on the academic front during the tenure of the past three VCs, the coalition appealed to the Search Committee formed by the government to recommend names of honest persons, who are academically strong, for the appointment of new VC. “Importantly, we urge the Search Committee not to consider former VCs of any Tamil Nadu universities in the last 15 years with a questionable track record,” A. Srinivasan, president of the coalition, said, adding that the committee must follow total transparency in the selection process. The coalition also appealed to the Search Committee to recommend names of those who are well-versed in Tamil to ensure easy communication with stakeholders, which is essential for administering the university efficiently.
