more-in DINDIGUL After a lull, the flower market here was buzzing with activity on Wednesday. While it was not good news for the consumers, however, growers and vendors were in an upbeat mood as prices of jasmine and rose varieties, among others, touched a new high. According to market sources, the price of jasmine was ? 1,200 a kg, whereas it was selling at ? 300 a kg till last week. Similarly, rose was selling at ? 100 a kg. With Vinayaka Chaturthi falling on Thursday, the market, one of the biggest in the region, witnessed brisk business from Tuesday as buyers from far away places had come to place orders and take away flowers in bulk quantities. According to Muniasamy from Nilakottai, flowers are grown in vast areas in Sempatti, A. Vellodu, Chinnalapatti Anumandarayankottai, Veerakal and other pockets. The harvest, this season, was good. “If the prices continue like this for some more time, say till Onam, we can make up the loss suffered in the past,” he said. Normally, flowers are transported in bulk quantity, depending on the season, to different parts of Kerala. However, the recent floods, which devastated the State, had come as a blow to growers. Under such circumstances, the Chaturthi festival has come in as a morale booster as flowers are in great demand again. Truck operators, mostly from Salem and Bengaluru, who were keeping their fingers crossed over the rising fuel prices, seemed to be relieved as brisk business, triggered by big demand, would help them repay finance companies.
