Plea in High Court to ban ‘song and dance’ events at festivals
- | Wednesday | 19th September, 2018
The aadal paadal events are usually staged at nights, mostly in rural areas during festivities, and often they have drawn criticism for suggestive gestures made by performers. A public interest litigation petition was filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday seeking a ban on aadal paadal (song and dance) programmes involving amateur artistes in the State on the grounds that traditional folk artistes were affected due to such events. The petitioner, M. Srinivasan, a member of Tamil Nadu Folk Artistes’ Welfare Board, sought a direction to the State to ensure that such obscene dance programmes were banned. Taking up the plea for hearing, a Division Bench of Justices M. M. Sundresh and N. Sathish Kumar issued notice to the Department of Tourism, Culture and Religious Endowments and adjourned the case for further hearing. The concept of aadal paadal, in which women were objectified and made to perform in a vulgar manner, could affect the youngsters and children who witness such programmes, he said.
