29 arrested for Shencottai communal clash

TIRUNELVELIPolice have arrested 29 persons – 18 Muslims and 11 Hindus – for their alleged involvement in the recent clash at Shencottai in Tirunelveli. “With the proof we have in hand, we’ve arrested 29 persons and the number will grow in the days to come,” said P.Ve. Police sources said some of the arrested persons could be detained under the Goondas Act also as their names had already figured in a few cases registered in the region. Arunshakthikumar, Superintendent of Police, who has camped at Shencottai for the investigation and interrogation of the accused being arrested in connection with the clash. After a clash broke out between Hindus and Muslims over taking Vinayaka idols in procession through the street in which Muslims live in large numbers on September 14, Shencottai witnessed anxious moments till midnight.

After a clash broke out between Hindus and Muslims over taking Vinayaka idols in procession through the street in which Muslims live in large numbers on September 14, Shencottai witnessed anxious moments till midnight. When cars, bikes and shops owned by the people of a particular community were targeted by the miscreants, the situation prompted the police to rush additional forces to the town. Though the situation was brought under control as more than 500 policemen were deployed and talks were held with the representatives of both groups, stone pelting during the idol procession triggered tension again. After going through the visuals and photographs captured during the violence, the police started arresting the miscreants. “With the proof we have in hand, we’ve arrested 29 persons and the number will grow in the days to come,” said P.Ve. Arunshakthikumar, Superintendent of Police, who has camped at Shencottai for the investigation and interrogation of the accused being arrested in connection with the clash.
