Mobile App to help goat, sheep farmers

Dean, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli M. Thirunavukkarasu, presided over the function and released ‘Mobile App for Sheep and Goat Farmers’. The efficacy of the App has been tested with randomly selected 60 sheep farmers and 30 goat farmers, 50 extension personnel and 25 technical experts. The mobile app will be uploaded in Google playstore within two months so that the farmers using Android mobile phones can download it and start receiving information on sheep and goat rearing. As part of the project, a workshop for farmers on ‘Mobile App in Small Ruminant Farming System’ was conducted to appraise the know-how of the mobile application software in Tamil and English on Monday at Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli.

Small ruminant enterprise is one of the livelihood options for the farmers of Tirunelveli district which has sheep and goat population of about 3,03,105 and 3,30,230 respectively, as per the 19th Livestock Census. Based on this, a NABARD-sponsored project on ‘Development of mobile-based technology transfer application system to empower the small ruminant farmers in Tirunelveli district’ is under operation at Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education (VAE), Veterinary College and Research Institute (VCRI), Tirunelveli since March last year. As part of the project, a workshop for farmers on ‘Mobile App in Small Ruminant Farming System’ was conducted to appraise the know-how of the mobile application software in Tamil and English on Monday at Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli. Dean, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli M. Thirunavukkarasu, presided over the function and released ‘Mobile App for Sheep and Goat Farmers’. After conducting a comprehensive survey about the needs of the cattle farmers, the App has been developed in Tamil and English to provide adequate information on breeds, breeding, management, disease control, marketing etc. with texts and videos. The mobile app will be uploaded in Google playstore within two months so that the farmers using Android mobile phones can download it and start receiving information on sheep and goat rearing. Director of Extension Education, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), Chennai, N. K. Sudeepkumar released ‘Project Leaflet’ and delivered the special address. Principal Investigator and Assistant Professor, VCRI, S. Senthilkumar, presented the details of the project and demonstrated the app in the presence of T. Ramesh, General Manager, NABARD, Chennai, F. Saleema, District Development Manager, NABARD, Tirunelveli, and V. Thanaseelan, Professor and VCRI, Tirunelveli.
