An explosion took place at an illegal firecracker factory in Thaiyilpatti near Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu`s Virudhunagar district. Two people were killed and two were injured in the explosion. Rescue work is going on at the incident site.

The injured have been taken to a nearby hospital, where they clarified that these people have serious burn injuries. Relief and rescue work is going on at the incident site; Police and other agencies have reached the spot. Five houses have also caught fire due to a fire in the factory.

Sivakasi is called the capital of India`s firecracker industry. There are more than 8000 factories, small and big, where firecrackers are made. According to an estimate, 90% of the country`s firecrackers are made here.

Due to the large scale production of firecrackers in Sivakasi, accidents also happen many times. A fire broke out at a firecracker factory in Virudhunagar earlier in February. 19 people died in the accident and more than 25 were injured. The police had said that the fire broke out during the mixing of chemicals, which had to be brought under control by the use of 10 fire brigade vehicles.

In October last year, a firecracker factory exploded in Madurai. 5 people including 3 women died in this. It was found during the investigation, that there was a fire while mixing the chemical, due to which there were serial blasts and people lost their lives.
