Colony in Madurai on Wednesday. | Photo Credit: S_James more-in In a bid to take the concept of ‘source segregation’ to each household, students of Sri Vidyalayam Matriculation Higher Secondary School in S.S. Colony undertook a door-to-door campaign on Wednesday. A group of 80 students distributed pamphlets and discussed waste disposal practices with residents. Guhesh. R, a Class XI student, enthusiastically said he would practise waste segregation in his school and at home. Assistant City Health Officer K. Parthipan, Assistant Commissioner of Zone 1 Arasu, former Councillor R. Lakshmi, volunteers from Enlight Trust and Corporation workers participated in the event. Mr. Parthipan said the Corporation chose to reach out to schoolchildren as it would have a replicative effect. “Parents, neighbours and other children would be attracted by this exercise and would want to participate. Each person generates half a kg of waste every day. It can be reduced if we pay more attention to segregation techniques,” he said. Children could be taken to Velakkal dumping yard as part of their educational trip. “Our aim is to ensure 100% waste segregation by October 2 (Gandhi Jayanthi),” he added. M. Rajadarshini of Enlight Trust, the organisers of the awareness campaign, said they wanted Ward 18 to be a model ward. The area had got 12 tricycles for garbage collection and 25 ‘Swachh Police’ members, who regularly monitor cleanliness of the ward. Residents’ associations had held two meetings on source segregation, she added. The event was organised in association with Bheema Jewellers.
