Manipur’s rights activist Irom Sharmila tied the knot with her longtime partner, British citizen Desmond Coutinha, in Tamil Nadu’s Kodaikanal in the presence of a few friends. No family members of either the bride or the groom were present when they signed the official documents at the registrar’s office.

The couple was based in Kodaikanal for the past two months to fulfill legal requirements. Sharmila, 45, ended a 16-year-long fast in 2016 and contested the assembly polls in Manipur this year. The news of wedding has made her well-wishers happy since they have always wanted her to settle down. Sharmila’s mother, Irom Sakhi, said the family was hopeful that she would find happiness in life. “A mother never wants her child to suffer.” Even as Sharmila and Desmond came down to Kodaikonal to finally be together, many social groups opposed to their union.

Earlier this month, members of the Hindu Makkal Katchi filed a petition against their wedding, alleging that Sharmila living in Kodaikonal will disrupt peace and stir a social unrest.
