The Rajiv Gandhi Panchayat Raj Sanghatan will organise a programme to commemorate the silver jubilee of the 73rd and 74th amendments giving more powers to Panchayat Raj institutions at the Town Hall here on Saturday. The participants would be told about the changes brought about by the 73rd and 74th amendments to the Panchayat Raj institutions and their importance. The former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi had played a vital role in strengthening the Panchayat Raj institutions. Dinesh Gundu Rao, working president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, Oscar Fernandes, Rajya Sabha member, M. Veerappa Moily, former Chief Minister, Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports, would be among the chief guests at the inaugural programme, Ms. Olivera said. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Roshani Olivera, convener of the Udupi district unit of the sanghatan, said that nearly 1,500 to 2,000 elected representatives of the Congress from the gram panchayats, taluk panchayats, zilla panchayats and urban local bodies would be participating in the programme.
