Woman files plaint against husband

A woman belonging to Muslim community has lodged a complaint with the police stating that her husband had allegedly assaulted and harassed her seeking a divorce (talaq) for the last six months. In her complaint lodged at the Kundapur police station on Wednesday, Safiya, 39, wife of Syed Mohammed, said that she had got married to Syed Mohammed, a resident of Kodi, 10 years ago. But at 2 p.m. on June 15, Syeed Mohammed allegedly hit her with an iron rod, showed her a knife and told her to divorce him.

They had two daughters. But for the last six months, her husband was telling her that he would marry another woman. He was allegedly torturing her both physically and mentally. She said that she had borne the torture for the sake of her children. But at 2 p.m. on June 15, Syeed Mohammed allegedly hit her with an iron rod, showed her a knife and told her to divorce him. He allegedly even threatened to kill her and their two daughters and throw their bodies into the sea if she did not divorce him. He allegedly threw the knife at her, but she escaped and then he fled from the spot, Ms. Safiya said in her complaint. Ms. Safiya was admitted to the Government Hospital in Kundapur due to the wounds suffered by her to her arms, shoulders and head during the assault. A case had been registered under Sections 307 and 498(A) of Indian Penal Code at the Kundapur police station. The Kundapur police said that Syed Mohammed was absconding and efforts are on to trace him.
