MU yet to take action against 4 tainted staff

Mangaluru: Mangalore University is yet to take disciplinary action against four of its staff including Umesh Naik, assistant professor at Library Science, for alleged misdemeanours.While Umesh is accused of sexual harassment, another lecturer from the human consciousness and yogic sciences department is accused of abusing senior faculty, while a staff from Chikkaluvara campus in Somwarpet taluk of Kodagu district was charged for allegedly taking a bribe to set up a stationery shop on campus. The fourth person, a non-teaching staff was guilty of not attending work for about eight months when he was transferred to another campus from Mangalagangothri campus.A senior official from Mangalore University, on condition of anonymity, told STOI that the four have been found to be guilty as charged by various varsity committees formed to probe the allegations. The vice Chancellor was in a dilemma as it would dent the image of the university and also certain groups would cry foul if disciplinary action was initiated,” the source said adding that all the reports have been kept on hold.Meanwhile, Umesh Naik had challenged the validity of SPARSH (Sensitization, Prevention & Redress of Sexual Harassment) committee since some of the members have been functioning from several years.“Soon we will call for an urgent syndicate meeting to discuss this,” said AM Khan, registrar (evaluation) when contacted by this newspaper
