MANGALURU: A woman and her grandson died after a wall collapsed on them following heavy rain . The accident occurred on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday near Hebbarbail in Puttur in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district.Police have identified the deceased as Parvathi, 68, and Dhanush, 11.Around 1.45am, the compound wall of their neighbour Bharathi Bhat collapsed due to heavy rain, which in turn fell on the house of the victims located at a lower level.The impact was such that a portion of the victims’ house collapsed killing the woman and her grandson. Five other members of the family survived in the accident, police said.Heavy rain in Sullia troubled scores of pilgrims to the renowned Kukke Subrahmanya temple.The bathing ghat of the temple was completely inundated.Pilgrims were ordered not to venture into river Kumaradhara which had reached the danger level mark.Locals of Mullarapatna in Bantwal woke up to another shock on Saturday as the pathway leading to the hanging bridge was marooned because of heavy rain. The people here are primarily dependent on the hanging bridge for traversing after the Mullarapatna bridge across river Phalguni collapsed bridge last week.The incessant rain also saw river Nethravati flow with full intensity. A retaining wall on the river located adjacent to the Thumbay dam slid partially causing panic.The district administration declared holiday for schools across Moodbidri, Sullia, Puttur, Belthangady and Uppinangadi. Educational institutes in Bantwal and Mangaluru taluks, however, were allowed to take a call on whether to conduct classes or not. Several institutes, including PU colleges in Mangaluru, declared holiday foreseeing heavy rainfall.
