24x7 water supply close to reality in Mangaluru city

As per the proposal, which was prepared keeping in mind the 2046 population, the responsibility of operation and maintenance of the water supply system will be handed over to a contractor for eight years. The remaining funds will have to be pooled by the city corporation through various other sources. The project was approved by the council with few corrections, which was suggested by the corporators.

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) council held a special meeting and decided to implement the Jalasiri-Karnataka Integrated Water Management Investment Programme (KIWMIP), to commence a 24x7 water distribution system in the city at a cost of Rs 390 crore.As per the detailed project report (DPR) prepared by the agency, the MCC will have to add 20 more water storage facilities, 8 additional pump houses and filter units under Jalasiri to provide uninterrupted drinking water to 60 wards of the city. In addition to lay new pipelines and parallel pipelines to existing lines, the project also ensures repair of roads damaged during the work and to shift utility lines.Once the new project is completed, every house will be connected with a class-B multijet water meter.While Rs 12.13 crore has been earmarked for civil works, 69.07 km of pipeline will be laid at an estimated cost of Rs 53.77 crore. Water storage tanks are proposed at Kunjathbail, Panjimogaru, Nekkilagudda, Mary Hill, Santhosh Nagar, Kodikal, Shaktinagar, Holy Hill, Nehru Maidan, Nandigudda, Morgan’s Gate, Valencia, J M Road-Bajal, Amritha Nagar, Udayanagara, NITK, Meenakalya, Kodipadi, Krishnapura and Kana, at an estimated cost of Rs 44.31 crore. Mechanical works related to the project will be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 25.82 crore while Rs 12.22 crore is reserved for electrical works and Rs 14.22 crore for creation of a distribution network.MCC commissioner Mohammed Nazeer said that Jalasiri project has a component of restoring roads, footpaths, interlocks and other utilities damaged during the work. “We have plans to lay parallel pipelines by the side of the road to avoid damage,” he said.Conditions for contractorTo ensure 24x7 water supply with 7 meter pressureTo implement the project without affecting the existing systemTo limit water wastage below 25%To issue bills to all consumers on timeTo open helpline centreTo ensure payment of bills within 15 days
