Cattle thieves have struck eight times at the house of Lakshmi in Mukkacherri in the last few years. “They are not acting on information that we give regarding such cattle trafficking routes or about cattle thefts,” Shenava added. There have been 21 instances where miscreants brandishing swords have stolen cattle from households of dairy farmers in Moodushedde area in the last one month. Making matters worse is that the government does not compensate them for their losses, Shenava added. To counter this, proposed gau raksha dal comprising of 10-20 local youths, who will patrol the villages in shifts and will take all steps necessary to counter the cattle thieves, he said adding this effort will go ahead with or without help from the law enforcers. Illegal abattoirs are flourishing in Ullaibettu area of the city with impunity and police despite knowledge of the same are not acting for reasons best known to them, he said.Such acts are hurting the economic interests of dairy farmers who are carrying out this profession for their sustenance with great difficulty, he said, adding grief these families undergo when cattle they rear like their own children are forcibly taken away from them and in some cases slaughtered before their eyes, is hard to describe.
