539 people on Nethravathi river banks in Bantwal taluk shifted to safer places

Last year, the district had received 309mm of rainfall till August 17.As on Friday, the water level in Nethravathi River at Bantwal was 9.5 meters well above the danger level of 8.5 meters. MANGALURU: As many as 539 people from 101 houses living or close to the Nethravathi river bank have been shifted to safer places by the Dakshina Kannada District Administration.The locals were shifted to safer places after an increase in the water flow in the river followin torrential rains in the upper reaches of the district, especially the Western Ghats . There are only 152 who have taken shelter in these centres and the rest have relocated themselves in their kins' houses. Belthangady, Puttur and Sullia Taluks received highest rainfall 119mm, 117mm and 100mm respectively.

MANGALURU: As many as 539 people from 101 houses living or close to the Nethravathi river bank have been shifted to safer places by the Dakshina Kannada District Administration.The locals were shifted to safer places after an increase in the water flow in the river followin torrential rains in the upper reaches of the district, especially the Western Ghats . The villagers were shifted from five areas near Pane Mangalore, three in B Mooda Village, one each from the villages of Barimaru, Thumbe, B Kasaba and Navoor.The people have been provided shelter at Sri Sharada High School, Panemangalore, Old Inspection Bungalow, Bantwal Kasaba Village and Zilla Panchayat School, Navoor. There are only 152 who have taken shelter in these centres and the rest have relocated themselves in their kins' houses. The maximum number 105 people shifted were from Nandarabettu of B Mooda Village from 20 houses, the least were from Baddakatte, 12 from three houses.FRIDAY RAINFALL: The district recorded 96mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours from 8.30am of Thursday. Belthangady, Puttur and Sullia Taluks received highest rainfall 119mm, 117mm and 100mm respectively. Mangaluru taluk received the least at 63mm of rainfall.Last year the district had received 17mm of rainfall. The cumulative rainfall for the month till Friday was 902mm. This surpassed the normal average for the month by 50mm with another 14 days to go. Last year, the district had received 309mm of rainfall till August 17.As on Friday, the water level in Nethravathi River at Bantwal was 9.5 meters well above the danger level of 8.5 meters.
