Krishna Byre Gowda, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister, speaking to a member of Solid and Liquid Resource Management Centre at Vandse in Udupi district on Monday. Krishna Byre Gowda, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister, said on Monday that priority was being given to promoting sustainable waste management in the villages in the State. Speaking to presspersons after visiting the Solid and Liquid Resource Management Centre here, Mr. Gowda said that waste management was a big problem in rural areas. Waste had to be treated as a resource. Scientific waste management would not just keep the villages clean but also generate jobs and revenue. His department was studying gram panchayats where such scientific waste disposal projects had been implemented so that it could be replicated in other GPs in the State. Already 45 lakh toilets had been built in rural areas of the State, four lakh more were needed to be built so that the State could be fully open defecation-free, he said. Later, chairing a review meeting of the department at the Town Municipal Council (TMC) Hall at Kaup in Udupi district, Mr. Gowda said that more works should be taken up under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) scheme in Udupi district. Even improvement of fields and plantations could be taken up under it. “The progress achieved by Udupi district under MNREGA scheme is not satisfactory,” he said. An action plan to construct compounds of 210 schools under MNREGA in the district was ready. The zilla panchayat should ensure that this work is taken up soon. Construction of compounds for anganwadis could be taken up under MNREGA. If there was no building for anganwadis in urban areas, they could use empty rooms in government schools for it. An amount of ?19,000 was available for construction of a cowshed under MNREGA. The GPs should disseminate this information. The roads under the ‘Namma Grama, Namma Raste’ scheme, damaged by rain should be repaired by contractors as per the terms of agreement. He directed the officers to draw up an action plan for construction of new roads where major district roads were fully damaged. The work on these roads should be started after monsoon.
