Mangaluru: Doctors at YMCH perform successful robotic surgery

MANGALURU: Doctors from Yenepoya Medical College and Hospital (YMCH), Deralakatte here have successfully performed a successful robotic kidney transplant . Yenepoya University finance director Farhad Yenepoya appreciated efforts of the doctors and promised to subsidise even robotic kidney transplant for the needy. Robotic surgery using the Da Vinci Surgical System has many advantages for patients.Although operating the Hi-Tech system requires high level of expertise, urologists from YMCH succeeded with both patient and donor being discharged within four-days of surgery. Urologists Drs Mujeeburahiman, Altaf Khan and Nischith D'souza with their team planned and performed the procedure with utmost care and surgery was performed by laparoscopy and recipient surgery with robot assistance.Robotic surgery has several advantages over conventional open surgery .

This is only second time in India where such a transplant has been done in a Medical College where doctors helped Satish (name changed) who was diagnosed with renal failure . Satish consulted nephrologist Dr Santhosh Pai at YMCH for generalized weakness and breathlessness.On diagnosis, he was started on haemo-dialysis and found to be suitable for renal transplant . Finding a donor was the next hurdle, which was overcome when his sister volunteered and turned out to be perfect match. Urologists Drs Mujeeburahiman, Altaf Khan and Nischith D'souza with their team planned and performed the procedure with utmost care and surgery was performed by laparoscopy and recipient surgery with robot assistance.Robotic surgery has several advantages over conventional open surgery . The surgeons have a clearer and magnified 3D operative field and as a result human error is minimized. Blood loss during surgery is very less. Intra and postoperative complications are minimized. Since the incision is very small, post-operative recovery is quick and uneventful.
