Karnataka: Dasara vacation cut by a week

The Department of Public Instruction has cut short Dasara vacation by a week taking into consideration the holidays declared to schools due to torrential rains in the region. MANGALURU: Rains have taken a toll on the Dasara holidays in Dakshina Kannada District. Till August end, the Dakshina Kannada district administration had declared nine days of holiday due to rains.The ordeal of students will not end with cutting short of Dasara holidays – Schools have been given the responsibility to function full day on Saturdays in case they fall short of working days to complete portions.This year Dasara holidays were scheduled from October 7 to 21. The revised holiday schedule is from October 14 to 21, inclusive of two Sundays.While nine holidays were declared by district administration to all taluks, some of the taluks like Belthangady, Puttur and Sullia have also independently gave extra days off depending upon local situation arising due to rains.As per the holiday notifications issued by department of public instruction, clause number four points out that if the normal working holidays get affected due to bandh or other reasons, the DDPI has right to cancel holidays in order to balance normal working days.The DPI circular also states that schools have to prepare time table to utilize the rescheduled holiday plan to accommodate teaching hours and also utilize September month in full for teaching.As per guidelines, every school functions 240 days in an academic year and compulsorily has to work for 220 days per annum.
