MANGALURU: Even as non-NDA parties are gearing up nationwide bandh on Monday to protest galloping fuel prices, former KPCC president B Janardhan Poojary on Sunday cautioned the bandh organisers of its consequences. If the (party) high command gives me the ticket, I will contest.” Incidentally, the octogenarian leader has contest Lok Sabha polls nine times since 1977, winning four and losing five times. Reminding them of Supreme Court judgement that the organisers will be fully responsible for resultant losses, Poojary said organisers – Congress included can’t escape its consequences if a case is filed in this regard.Noting that it is easy for all and sundry to give a bandh call, Poojary told reporters here that the organisers will be personally responsible for crores of rupees loss that such bandhs cause. When reminded that it is the Congress that has given call for nationwide bandh with opposition parties tacitly or directly support it, Poojary said it does not matter who has given the call and the SC ruling applies to all, be it an individual or a party.Noting that it is a fallacy that mere reduction in excise duty will help cool off fuel prices, Poojary summing up his experience as former union minister for finance said he too had tried reasoning with powers that be for the same while he was the minister. Noting that no one than agreed with him (for a duty reduction), Poojary said, what he did then (in attempting to cut duty) was wrong, adding he should not have said so and stands by it now.Justifying his remark that duty reduction is not the answer, Poojary said, “Government should run, shouldn’t it?” Hinting that populism is not the way to govern, he said, “If we continue to be so, we can’t run government for a day.” Asserting that going after hoarders of essential commodities is way forward to check prices in general, excepting fuel, Poojary without offering a solution for fuel price spiral, merely said PM Narendra Modi should act.Asked if he would contest the next general elections, Poojary, who was subdued in demeanour answering queries till then, with newfound vigour, said, “I am ready.” Signalling his readiness, Poojary said, “Ticket should be given to me.
