Mangaluru: Police seize sand worth Rs 5 lakh

MANGALURU: Mangaluru rural police station and anti-rowdy squad headed by assistant commissioner of police, Mangaluru south sub-division, on Thursday raided three private places at Valachil, Adyar and Arkula on a tip-off that sand was illegally stored there.Police who informed the officials of department of mines and geology to these spots later seized nearly 780 tonnes of sand (around 78 lorry loads) valued at Rs 5 lakh.Police have started investigation into the reasons why this large quantity of sand has been stored in the area and the purpose for which it was stored, while handing over the sand to the deputy director of the department.The raid was carried out on directions from T R Suresh, city police chief, under the supervision of Uma Prashanth, deputy commissioner of police (crime and traffic).
