DRI sleuths recover gold worth Rs 47 lakh, nab two including airport staff

MANGALURU: Officers from the regional unit of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) here have nabbed two people, including an official of the Mangalore International Airport (MIA), on charges of smuggling gold from Dubai to Mangaluru.The accused passenger is identified as Nizar Khadar, 32, hailing from Kasargod in Kerala. He arrived at the city in Spicejet Flight No. SG-60 at around 6.15pm on Thursday, an official communique issued by the MIA on Friday stated.While gold weighing in excess of 1.5kg worth Rs 47 lakh was recovered from the passenger, the authorities seized Rs 25 lakh from the tainted official’s residence. The communique stated that the airport official had received the money from Khadar to help him in the crime.According to the press statement, Khadar had concealed 12 tola bars of gold of foreign origin (intact) and a sheet of gold of foreign origin – all 24 karat – in a black mobile pouch and carried it in his hand baggage. The officers said the gold was concealed in the mobile pouch using black/silver adhesive tapes in order to avoid detection. The contraband gold was later seized by the officers of DRI under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
