MANGALURU: People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) on Friday alleged that the state government has not done anything to investigate the alleged custodial death of David D’Souza , who was a human rights activist and president of PUCL, Dakshina Kannada in 2015.National vice-president of PUCL, alleged that senior police officers are shielding their counterparts in the case. D’Souza’s death was reported on July 2, 2015, when he had gone along with Stany Fernades to Mangaluru Rural police station with regards to a family dispute case.“The station officer had allegedly dragged D’Souza to a room and beaten him up. After 10 minutes, an unconscious D’Souza was moved to a hospital where he was declared brought dead. Even after 39 months, nothing has been done to investigate his cause of death. Police have failed to register an FIR against the accused inspector, nor has the government taken any steps in this regard. The case did not progress despite promises from the home minister and other senior police officials,” he alleged. He further added that police were furnished with a copy of evidence from eyewitness Fernades to the then city police commissioner and home minister, but there seems to be neither action initiated nor the government of Karnataka showing any concern for the life of the human rights activist. The NHRC clearly says that as long as the death occurred or was caused due to police action and that too, in the police station premises, an FIR has to be raised against the police officials concerned, however, the government has failed to do so.The PUCL demanded that justice is served in the case by conducting a fair investigation.
