As an animal rescue centre, the Animal Care Trust in Shaktinagar sees animals of all kinds arriving at the centre in various conditions. But recently, it witnessed a heart-wrenching scene, when a dog was brought to the centre, covered in thick tar. Six volunteers helped in this mission and worked on him for two days,” says Mamtha Rao, one of the volunteers, who was part of the clean-up operation. The dog had accidentally fallen into tar, and was lying in it for two days until he was rescued by a passer-by. “Daamru (as he’s been christened at the trust) was brought to us by a good Samaritan and we got down to immediately working on him.

Six volunteers helped in this mission and worked on him for two days,” says Mamtha Rao, one of the volunteers, who was part of the clean-up operation. Daamru was initially scrubbed clean of the painful tar, after which oil was poured and he was gently cleaned.“On the first day, we started at about 11.30 am and wrapped up around 4 pm, because we dint want to exhaust him. He was already in trauma, so we decided to let him rest it out that day. Day two, by about mid noon he was completely tar free. His fur was clipped off and once he was thoroughly scrubbed, he received a medicated bath. Daamru was given nourishing food and liquids at regular intervals to keep him going through this laborious process,” she states. And through it all, Daamru sat patiently without any resistance which helped to speed up the procedure. “He is fine now and is under observation because of the toxic condition he was in. But he’s a fighter and will soon be on his feet,” sums up Mamtha.
