Mangaluru: The city police chief has suspended an assistant sub-inspector in connection with the case of a person being illegally detained and tortured in police custody According to reports, the suspended official is Chandrashekhar from Mangaluru North police station In August, Ashraf Salethur, a supporter of the Democratic Youth Federation of India ( DYFI ) was allegedly detained by the police over a Facebook post. The police charged that the post was provocative in nature. However, Ashraf had alleged that the City Crime Bureau police had called him to the police station and placed him under illegal detention. He was later handed over to police at the Mangaluru North station where he spent the night.Meanwhile, DYFI has cried foul over the suspension of ASI Chandrashekhar. In a statement released to the media, it has noted that Chandrashekhar has been made a scapegoat. The DYFI members said the police who allegedly tortured Ashraf were not even questioned, but Chandrashekhar, who according to them was not involved in the case, was made to face the brunt in the issue.Hanumantharaya DCP (law and order) said action against the officer was taken after an internal inquiry.
