Unscientific division of city police stations inconveniences many

The government has allotted funds for construction of a new Mangaluru Rural station at Vamanjoor, and the process is on for a Mangaluru Town police station as well South Traffic police station. Mangaluru: The unscientific geographical division of some of the police stations under Mangaluru City Commissionerate is causing inconvenience to residents For example, if a person from Arkula has to go to Mangaluru Rural police station located in Vamanjoor, he has to travel around 12 km. One has to depend on private vehicles for transportation, and it’s still worse if one has to go every day in case of some legal issues.”Meanwhile, another person suggested that Arkula be added to the Mangaluru Town station. Some of the stations function in rented houses or commercial spaces with no adequate facilities.“Arkula, which comes under Mangaluru Rural police station, is just 7 km away from Mangaluru Town station, and is located close to the national highway. If police personnel have to reach the same spot, they have to travel at least for half-an-hour.

Mangaluru: The unscientific geographical division of some of the police stations under Mangaluru City Commissionerate is causing inconvenience to residents For example, if a person from Arkula has to go to Mangaluru Rural police station located in Vamanjoor, he has to travel around 12 km. If police personnel have to reach the same spot, they have to travel at least for half-an-hour. Meanwhile, the same police station is very close to Moodushedde and Pilikula, whose jurisdiction comes under the Kavoor police station limits. There are 16 police stations under the commissionerate and unscientific geographical positioning of these stations is resulting in poor policing, and has irked several citizens, who have to travel a long distance to reach them. Some of the stations function in rented houses or commercial spaces with no adequate facilities.“Arkula, which comes under Mangaluru Rural police station, is just 7 km away from Mangaluru Town station, and is located close to the national highway. We want city police commissionerate officials to take this issue seriously and make necessary arrangements so that citizens are not at the receiving end,” says a private firm employee, who recently went to the Mangaluru Rural police station for passport verification. He adds, “If you go to the station after dark, it is quite difficult to get back to your place, as there are not much transport facilities available. One has to depend on private vehicles for transportation, and it’s still worse if one has to go every day in case of some legal issues.”Meanwhile, another person suggested that Arkula be added to the Mangaluru Town station. Madhav Pilikula requested that Pilikula, Moodushedde and a few nearby villages be added under the jurisdiction of the Mangaluru Rural station, since they are located 10 km away from the current jurisdiction—the Kavoor police station.Similarly people belonging to Bajpe police station, one of the biggest stations under the commissionerate, have been demanding that areas like Gurupur, Muttur and nearby places be added under the jurisdiction of the Mangaluru Rural police station as it very close, as compared to Bajpe, which takes 30 minutes to travel to.QuoteT R Suresh, City Police CommissionerateEarlier there were demands to redistribute the jurisdiction allotted to certain stations. We have sent the proposal to the government for their consideration. The government has allotted funds for construction of a new Mangaluru Rural station at Vamanjoor, and the process is on for a Mangaluru Town police station as well South Traffic police station. The government has enough funds, but getting the right place is the biggest problem.
