Mangaluru: Family pledges gold to construct toilet

MANGALURU: The resolve of an eight-year-old girl from Moodukonaje in Moodbidri taluk, about 50km from here, to have a toilet at home made her parents pledge their gold ornaments to build it.Thanks to a cleanliness awareness talk at her government primary school, Kavya, 8, resident of Moodukonaje which comes under the Shirtadi village panchayat, decided that her family should put an end to open defecation . She’s the youngest daughter of Seena and Leela who work as daily wage labourers.“I was inspired by the talk at school and began to pester my parents to build a toilet. My parents finally agreed to it but we’re poor and couldn’t afford to build one,” she said.A few years ago, the family had taken a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh to repair the thatched roof of their house. The land on which they stay is not in their name and title deeds problems are yet to be sorted out. The family, which includes Kavya’s 10-year-old elder brother, depends on nearby plots for open defecation.Her parents, giving in to Kavya’s pressure, contacted panchayat officials for find out if there was any scheme to construct a toilet but nothing concrete happened. It was completed a week ago.Once it was built, the family is now facing another problem. It’s located on the Naga Beedi , a route used by the serpent god. As per local belief, no one should hinder its movements and if it’s done, there could be a negative impact. The family is now looking at religious rites to prevent that and only then will they use it in a week or two. The family has given a fresh application from the panchayat for government grants.
