Academic council approves three new certificate courses

The postgraduate course in tourism administration and master of tourism administration course – since rechristened as MBA (tourism and travel management) were started under department of business administration in 2001 and has been growing in all respects. Mangaluru: The third general meeting of the academic council of Mangalore University that in-charge vice-chancellor Ishwara P chaired on Friday approved introduction of three new certificate courses– horticultural practices and post-harvest technology, soil testing and nursery gardening and floriculture. Faculty of science and technology on January 5 approved revised syllabus for these courses after informing board of studies and dean of the faculty.Incidentally, the above three certificate courses entails 48 hours of teaching and 10 hours of practicals, A M Khan, registrar, said at the meeting that in-charge vice-chancellor Ishwara P chaired. The finance committee and the syndicate have already approved the proposal mooted by the committee at its meetings on October 26 and 27, respectively.The draft statute governing the establishment of department of tourism administration carving it out from the department of business administration too received the nod of the council. A course on horticultural practices and post-harvest technology will strive to introduce aspirants to topics such as horticultural practices, horticultural techniques, floriculture as well as disease control and management in this newly-emerging area.The council also approved regulation governing postgraduate diploma course in yogic science programme of 1-year duration for 600 marks which was cleared at the January 5 meeting of the faculty of science and technology and sent to the council.

Likewise, the council also approved regulations governing certificate course in yogic science of three-month duration for 400 marks with the revised syllabus, Khan said.The university also approved a proposal mooted by Prasanna Kumar Rai, convener, prof K Byrappa Felicitation Committee, to set up the Professor K Byrappa Endowment Lecture and also a gold medal in his name for which a sum of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 2 lakh, respectively, have been set aside.
