Police asked to evict pushcart hawkers from Central Market area

Mangaluru: A vendor from the Central Market on Friday urged the city police to evict pushcart hawkers off the premises, alleging that the latter’s illegally conducting sales had been eating heavily into the business of those legally running shops in the market.The grievance was aired during the phone-in programme convened by the Mangaluru City Police , here on Friday.The vendor, representing all business stalls in the central market, said their businesses suffered greatly as pushcart vendors and street hawkers gathered in the premises, thereby blocking the way to the market. This, he said, drove customers to buy from the pushcart vendors due to easy access.Those trading in the stalls set up at the market pay a monthly fee to the city corporation for carrying out their business, while the pushcart hawkers do not pay any fee.The vendor further complained that the hawkers encroached upon the market premises in increasing numbers, especially in the evenings.Police raids have had little or no effect on the street hawkers, he said.In response, Uma Prashanth , DCP (crime and traffic) assured him that the police department would draw the attention of the Mangaluru City Corporation, in this connection, and help take suitable action in this regard.Cables on roadsAnother caller complained about the contractors and their workers leaving cables unattended on the road after undertaking civic works.
