As polls near, vigilance at checkposts intensifies

A close watch is being kept on vehicles at checkposts bordering Kerala at Talapady, Kanyana, Anekallu and Karadka among 12 such vantage points, Jalsooru and Narkodu in Sullia, Sampya in Puttur, Guruvayavankere and Jarigebailu in Belthangady and Nekkiladi near Uppinangadi.

Mangaluru: As soon as the Election Commission announced the election dates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls , the police has set up as many as 43 checkposts across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi to check flow of cash and liquor among other commodities to various parts of the state and outside.Police said CCTV cameras have been installed in border areas to maintain extra vigilance. Vehicles are being checked round-the-clock for which personnel have been deployed in three shifts. Central forces are also expected to join election duty shortly.An official in the Dakshina Kannada district police said special drives are being conducted at checkposts bordering Kerala, based on inputs that there are high chances of liquor being transported to the neighbouring district which has restriction on sale of alcoholic drinks . In addition, the police are also checking for gifts in the form of cash and expensive items going to Kerala. A close watch is being kept on vehicles at checkposts bordering Kerala at Talapady, Kanyana, Anekallu and Karadka among 12 such vantage points, Jalsooru and Narkodu in Sullia, Sampya in Puttur, Guruvayavankere and Jarigebailu in Belthangady and Nekkiladi near Uppinangadi. In Mangaluru City limits, vehicles are being checked at Kottara, Nantoor, Jeppinamogaru and Pumpwell.B M Laxmi Prasad, SP, Dakshina Kannada, told reporters that confidence building measures are being undertaken among voters, with security forces carrying out route marches.Officials said the district administrations of Dakshina Kannada and Kasaragod have held several rounds of meetings, where a host of issues were discussed. They said to promote coordination between officials of the two districts, training sessions to staff from the department of police, RTO, revenue, income tax and forest among others, under the leadership of Dakshina Kannada DC Sasikanth Senthil S and Kasargod DC Sajith Babu have already been held.In Udupi, nine checkposts have been set up in view of polls. Among these, the prominent ones are those set up at Shiroor, Hejamadi, Mala, Someshwar and Sanoor. CCTV cameras have been installed at all checkposts in Udupi district, according to Udupi police.Objections raisedMeanwhile, a few people have raised objections over the lack of reflectors on barricades. Complaints have been heard from Jeppinamogaru and Farangipete in city limits and Sampya and Guruvayankere in district limits. A caller, during the phone-in session convened by the city police last Friday, said the barricades set up at Kottara were causing inconvenience to pedestrians.
