Udupi: Udupi has emerged as a special district by facing the Lok Sabha election 2019 in two phases . On April 18, a section of residents from here will vote for the Udupi-Chikkamagaluru Lok Sabha constituency and in the second phase on April 23, another section will vote to choose their candidate for the Shivamogga Lok Sabha constituency.Udupi ZP CEO Sindhu B Roopesh said, “Udupi is the only district which faces voting in both the first and second phase in the entire state this year. Kaup, Karkala, Kundapura, and Udupi assembly constituencies will have an election on April 18. However, Byndoor assembly constituency will face elections on April 23. Though it sounds special, it does create its own hurdles for officials here. No event can be carried out exclusively for one Lok Sabha constituency, and the SVEEP committee which creates awareness in both constituencies, are forced to speak for both election dates. In the 2014 election, even though there were two Lok Sabha constituencies, the election was organised in single phases.”“People of Udupi are informed about the election and related information like the use of EVMs and VVPATs.However, these dates might confuse some sections of society, hence, clear instructions have been given to all voters by SVEEP officials. As polling is going to be held in two phases, SVEEP programs will continue till April 23 in the district. The Udupi district commissioner and district administration will make all the necessary preparations for voting. In addition to creating awareness on voting, in case there are any violations of the model code of conduct will also be monitored here. However, the returning officer (RO) will sit at the Shivamogga Lok Sabha constituency,” Sindhu said.“The Chikkamagaluru DC will take care of all the poll-related responsibilities, and RO will receive candidates nominations at Udupi. Permission for the small event can be taken from the Byndoor assistant election officer, however, large events will be held only after getting permission from the Udupi DC,” the ZP CEO added.Elections for the Udupi Lok Sabha constituency started in 1957, and most of the region in Udupi was under Bantwal assembly constituency. However, Karkala was made part of Chikkamagaluru Lok Sabha constituency. In 2008, four taluks were included from both Udupi and Chikkamagaluru districts under the Udupi- Chikkamagaluru constituency . From Udupi, Kundapur, Karkala, Kaup and Udupi taluks were added under the constituency and from Chikkamagaluru, Sringeri, Mudigere, Tarikere, and Chikkamagaluru taluks were added under the constituency. Byndoor assembly constituency was included in the Shivamogga Lok Sabha constituency.
