MANGALURU: Family politics or dynasty politics has become a norm in many states, including Karnataka. While a few families have been loyal to one party for several years, there are several political families that have loyalists in different parties. However, Dakshina Kannada is indifferent to family politics till today. Senior leaders like former Union minister B Janardhan Poojary has seen it to that his family stayed away from politics. Former chief minister Veerappa Moily had tried hard to field his son Harsha Moily from Dakshina Kannada constituency in the previous Lok Sabha poll. Since then, Harsha has not been active in politics, but as per his tweets in January, he had participated in meetings organised by block Congress with leaders and party workers belonging to Devanahalli Vidhana Sabha constituency. He had discussed their approach and strategy to win the Devenahalli muncipal and Lok Sabha elections Prof P L Dharma from the department of political science, Mangalore University said: “Unless we give space to others and make others involve in the party affairs, where the leadership is given, democracy will not sustain and it will not grow. Dynasty politics is undemocratic and anti-Constitutional. People have realised it and therefore in the past so many years, NOTA has become a serious matter to be reckoned with.”Speaking about Dakshina Kannada, he said the district has kept itself above family politics because it has largely been into a number of financial activities. The banking sector became important. Hotel industries and religious activities have become the priorities of the area. Politics has never been their priority. It has always experimented with new entry and the only trend we have had has been with Veerappa Moily—who wanted to field his son, but so far could not do it. Minister UT Khader took over in a different political circumstance, that is after his father’s death.
