Kudla Police turn inward in nabbing assailants of Karthikraj

Kavyashree, who was married three years ago with her husband working abroad, had developed friendship with Gautam. Later, the next day, he succumbed to head injuries at a private hospital.City police chief said Kavyashree, victim's sister was working at Kanachur Hospital where Gautam too worked. Investigations have revealed that animosity and differences between the sibings led to the murder.

MANGALURU: After six months of investigation in to the much touted murder of engineer Karthikraj at Ganesh Mahal in Konaje, Mangaluru City Police have arrested his sister, her paramour and paramour's brother for the same.Earlier it was believed that murder is part had communal intent to it and several right wing chauvinists held protests across the district with BJP MP Nalin Kumar Kateel leading it. Interestingly, the Karthikraj's sister too was a prominent fact in the protests seeking justice for Karthikraj.City police commissioner, M Chandra Sekhar , who termed the outcome of the case as the result of 'trademark investigation' resulting in nabbing of the accused said police arrested Kavyashree, 25, her friend Gautham, 26 and his brother Gaurav, 19. The duo are residents of Pandit House. Investigations have revealed that animosity and differences between the sibings led to the murder. Kavyashree had promised the accused Rs 5 lakh to complete their house construction work.Karthikraj, son of BJP leader Umesh Pajir, was assaulted by unidentified miscreants near Ganesh Mahal under Konaje police station limits, while he was jogging on October 22, 2016. Later, the next day, he succumbed to head injuries at a private hospital.City police chief said Kavyashree, victim's sister was working at Kanachur Hospital where Gautam too worked. Kavyashree, who was married three years ago with her husband working abroad, had developed friendship with Gautam. Kavyashree had learnt that Gautam required financial help as he fell short of money to complete his under-construction house. Using this as a bait, she mentioned her bitter relationship with Karthikraj and asked Gautham to murder him and promised Rs 5 lakh in return.Gautam, who planned an attack along with his college-going brother Gaurav conducted a recce two days before the murder. They learnt that Karthikraj went jogging early morning and there was no vehicle or people's movement on that road and they could seize the moment and proceeded to assault him with an iron rod.Investigation was delayed as there were too many confusions and special police team constituted had worked on every detail so that innocents are not arrested, Chandra Sekhar confided.ACCUSED SHIELDED?According to sources, police had zeroed in on the trio soon after the incident but were let off due to influence of a senior police official, who happens to be relative of Kavyashree and had worked in the same jurisdiction. However, city police chief scotched this angle.PROTESTS AND REWARDRight-wing activists led by Nalin Kumar Kateel had staged protests in this regard and pointed fingers at PFI activists and accused political leaders of trying to shield them. In the last protest held in March, an entrepreneur had announced Rs 1 lakh reward for police if they had arrested accused in a month. "We missed the reward as we nabbed trio after 40 days," said a police officer on a lighter note.Chandra Sekhar has announced Rs 25,000 reward to investigation team headed by Valentine D'Souza, ACP, City Crime Record Bureau(CCRB).
