Ambedkar. She was speaking after inaugurating the “Muru Nudu – Nuru Dudi” programme organised as part of the 126th birth anniversary celebrations of B.R. Ambedkar by the Department of Social Welfare and Dalit organisations at the Sri Narayanaguru Sabha Bhavan, here. Ms. Shetty said that it was due to the Constitution provided by Ambedkar that people of all classes enjoyed equality without any discrimination. The Constitution was a sacred document which had a blueprint for not just the welfare of the people but also for providing equal opportunities to all. It was due to this Constitution that even people coming from weaker sections of society could now become elected representatives. Ambedkar was a visionary who was responsible for bringing in far-reaching social reforms through the Constitution. A stickler to principles, he had resigned from Pandit Nehru’s Cabinet when he felt that he could not carry forward his reforms, Ms. Shetty said. Priyanka Mary Francis, Deputy Commissioner, said that Ambedkar had laid emphasis on education, organisation and struggle. One only had to read his scholarly works to know his clarity on various issues related to Indian society. Reading his works provided one with a clear picture on which path one should tread. Ambedkar strived for the welfare of weaker sections of society, he said. Barkur Uday, Professor in History, Mangalore University, delivered a lecture on Ambedkar. S.N. Ramesh, Deputy Director, Department of Social Welfare, welcomed the gathering. Meenakshi Bannanje, president of the Udupi City Municipal Council, Nalini P. Rao, president of the Udupi Taluk Panchayat, K.T. Balakrishna, Superintendent of Police, were present.
