P. Vishwanath Rai, president, district unit, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), said on Monday that government policies should aim for the welfare of the poor, especially farmers and working classes. Mr. Rai said that the wealthy had become wealthier, while farmers, workers and daily labourers had remained poor in the last 70 years since the country attained Independence. But the government had not bothered to help the farmers, while it always went an extra mile to help the industrialists. He was speaking at a dharna on ‘Protect labour laws, save the Constitution’ organised by the CITU in front of the Clock Tower. Though farmers were committing suicide, neither the governments of the States or the Centre were affected.
