Now, the locals who wish to apply for a driving licence will have to do it online. After applying online for the driving licence, the person concerned will have to go to the RTO office to get his/her biometrics done. It is beset with two problems — slow internet speed and the maximum number of driving licences that can be made in a day is only 150 unlike 265 under the previous system.“The system has been upgraded to Sarathi 4.0 and has been opened for public use. Now, the locals who wish to apply for a driving licence will have to do it online. However, we are facing some teething troubles with the online system and hopefully, they will get sorted soon,” said Vijay Kumar, regional transport officer (administration).The new system will save locals from the hassle of standing in long queues and unnecessary delay. After applying online for the driving licence, the person concerned will have to go to the RTO office to get his/her biometrics done. As the RTO system in Meerut has been upgraded to Sarathi 4.0, no driving licence-related work will be done offline,Giving details about the problems being faced in the process of getting driving licences, Kumar said, “Slow internet speed is a major problem due to which processing of driving licences take time. This problem is being looked into and will be solved very soon.“Since the system has just started, the maximum driving licences that can be issued in a day is only150, unlike previous system’s 265. This number will be increased with time but it will happen only slowly,” said Kumar.Earlier in April 2017, the officials had announced that the Sarathi 4.0 application would be started here. However, since it was in the initial phase, it could not be implemented completely. In fact, both offline and online mode were kept open due to the tepid response from customers, but now on only the online mode will be open for driving issuing licences.
