Meerut traffic comes under high-tech surveillance

MEERUT: A dedicated control centre to regulate traffic in the city will finally be operational as ADG ( Meerut zone Prashant Kumar inaugurated the Traffic Control Centre in Traffic Lines on Friday. “Ever since the idea of traffic management centre was mooted, 141 CCTVs were installed by a private company. The app has been developed to make local residents stakeholders in traffic monitoring. In addition, 55 cameras already installed by the traffic department and 32 CCTVs installed for city control room (CCR) by civil police will also be sending feeds to the traffic management centre,” said Sanjeev Kumar Vajpayee, superintendent of police (traffic).The traffic management centre will be aided by 25 motorcycle-borne traffic personnel (TRAMOs) and 10 on scooters (Traffic Angels). The traffic angels have been tasked with creating awareness on traffic rules and regulations,” said SP (traffic) Sanjeev Kumar.An app — civic eye — has been developed by the department along with an NGO, Janagraha.

The state-of-the-art facility has over a dozen LEDs mounted on a wall monitoring the length and breath of the city through high-tech CCTV cameras installed at all important crossings, bylanes and public places. The centre is also seen as a shot in the arm in crime monitoring and investigation.According to the police, a total of 228 CCTV cameras have been installed at several locations in the city. “Ever since the idea of traffic management centre was mooted, 141 CCTVs were installed by a private company. In addition, 55 cameras already installed by the traffic department and 32 CCTVs installed for city control room (CCR) by civil police will also be sending feeds to the traffic management centre,” said Sanjeev Kumar Vajpayee, superintendent of police (traffic).The traffic management centre will be aided by 25 motorcycle-borne traffic personnel (TRAMOs) and 10 on scooters (Traffic Angels). “Whenever a traffic situation will be spotted, the TRAMOs will be pressed in service to clear it. The traffic angels have been tasked with creating awareness on traffic rules and regulations,” said SP (traffic) Sanjeev Kumar.An app — civic eye — has been developed by the department along with an NGO, Janagraha. The app has been developed to make local residents stakeholders in traffic monitoring. “People can send in pictures of erring commuters who flout traffic norms. Appropriate action will taken by the department after verification," said another cop with traffic department.In the next phase of upgradation, vehicles used by personnel on TRAMOs and Traffic Angels will be updated with GPS system to track positions of vehicles to ensure speedy redressal.
