Two women murdered over dowry in Bijnor, M’nagar

Bijnor: A 21-year-old woman, Preeti, has been found mysteriously dead in her room in Dharuwala village in Bijnor. Her brother, Arjun Kumar, filed a complaint against Preeti’s husband and his family members for killing his sister over dowry. He told the cops that as Preeti’s in-laws were not happy with the dowry they received, they kept harassing her for more. A total of 502 dowry deaths were reported in the state between January and March this year.

When her in-laws informed her family about the incident, claiming she had died of “natural causes”, the latter found froth in her mouth and injury marks on the body. Her brother claimed it to be a dowry death, saying her in-laws often harassed her for money. A case was lodged at Bijnor police station and the deceased’s husband, along with his parents, was arrested.According to police, Preeti, a resident of Bhikkawala, had married 24-year-old Lokendra Kumar of Dharuwala village on April 30, last year. Her in-laws informed her family of her death on Saturday morning. Her brother, Arjun Kumar, filed a complaint against Preeti’s husband and his family members for killing his sister over dowry. He told the cops that as Preeti’s in-laws were not happy with the dowry they received, they kept harassing her for more. When their demands were not met, they killed her.Sub inspector, Begawala police, Sanjay Giri said, “We have sent the body of the woman to the district hospital for post mortem. She was frothing and there were several marks of injuries on her body.” Bijnor station house officer, Fatah Singh, said, “We have filed a case against the deceased’s husband, his father and mother for dowry death. They were arrested in this connection.”In a similar incident in Muzaffarnagar's Kasopur village, a woman, 23-year-old Siba, a resident of Chhabar succumbed to her burn injuries in a hospital on Sunday. She had been admitted to the hospital on Friday after she was set on fire by her in-laws. Her husband, along with three others from his family have been booked in the case after her family alleged she had been tortured by her in-laws. All the accused are absconding.The State has seen a spike in such cases in 2018. A total of 502 dowry deaths were reported in the state between January and March this year. In the same time span, 488 cases were registered in 2017 and 481 cases were registered in 2016.
