Hence, the state government has planned various events for rural and urban areas,” said Meerut chief medical officer Dr Raj Kumar Chaudhary.“Due to high fertility rate in Meerut, the district has been kept in the family development category, i.e. MEERUT: On the occasion of World Population Day on Tuesday, the district health department will kick-start a fortnight-long drive which includes sterilization camps for men and women, rallies to spread awareness on birth control and distribution of contraceptive pills.According to health department officials, the drive is being organised as the fertility rate of Meerut district is 3.1 as compared to the state figure which stands at 2.7.“Public awareness and support from the masses is very important for population control . those undergoing population control measures will benefit more as compared to their counterparts in the other districts,” he added.The campaign includes visits of ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers and ANMs (Auxiliary Nurse Midwives) to houses in rural areas and making them aware about various methods of family planning.
